We are excited to announce the completion of our first feature film, “A Jazzman’s Jazzman: the Gerry Carruthers Story.” The film is a mockumentary that tells the story of Gerry Carruthers, an eccentric jazz musician. Featuring improvised performances by some of Seattle’s best acting talent, a terrific score, and beautiful stop-motion animation, the film runs just under an hour.
We’ll be announcing the date and location of our premiere soon!
Man Talk and The Mr. Azymuth Suite will be shown for a full week at the Grand Illusion theater in the University District. From September 4th through the 10th, you can see both films, as well as many other local comedy shorts, as part of the Grand Illusion’s new Washington Grown film series. So mark your calendar, tell your friends, and help support local filmmaking!
Our installation based on our short film “Man Talk” is on display at ACT, A Contemporary Theatre, along with four other installations. ACT is located at 7th Avenue and Union Street in downtown Seattle. Come see Kevin’s cubicle from the window on 7th Avenue, then step inside to the Falls Theatre/Bullitt Cabaret lobby to see Marty’s executive office. Read their inter-office memos and calendar entries! Be inspired by their business-themed posters! The film plays on a loop every weekday after 5:00pm, and all weekend. The installation will be on display until September.
This was a project from a couple years ago, before we called ourselves Cro-Magnon Pictures. It was an experiment in using improvisation and a documentary shooting style. The scene is a couple at home late one night when a stranger shows up at their door asking to use the phone. There was no script, no predetermined plot outline, and it was all shot in one uninterrupted take. The actor playing the stranger was given a back-story and a clear goal for the scene. The actors playing the couple were not even aware they would be joined by a third. They all reacted to the situation and each other while we filmed with three cameras.
The Mr. Azymuth Suite, the first short by Cro-Magnon Pictures. Created by Ben Harris, Mr. Azymuth is inspired by Jacques Tati, Charlie Chaplin, and Buster Keaton.
“Man Talk” is Cro-Magnon’s second short. It follows a conversation between Kevin and Marty, two businessmen competing for the upper hand, as they speak in a language that reveals the true intentions behind everything they say.
