Unexpected is an experiment in using improvisation and a documentary shooting style to lend a feeling of immediacy and reality to a story. The scene opens on a couple relaxing at home when a stranger shows up at their door asking to use the phone. Against their better judgment, they let him in, only to come to realize he has no intention of leaving. There was no script, no predetermined plot outline, and it was all shot in one uninterrupted take. The actor playing the stranger was given a back-story and a clear objective for the scene. The actors playing the couple were not even aware they would be joined by a third. They all reacted to the situation and each other while the scene was filmed with three cameras.
